1/2/2010 - SATHER AIR BASE, Iraq -- The 447th Expeditionary Communications Squadron held a change of command ceremony here Dec. 27, 2009 in the movie tent.
Lt. Col. Donald Cournoyer took command of the 447th ECS from Lt. Col. Joseph Veit.
Colonel Cournoyer previously served as the commander of the 54th Combat Communications Squadron at Robins Air Force Base, Ga. During his 15 years in the Air Force the colonel has deployed four previous times in support of Operation Allied Force, Operation Enduring Freedom and twice to Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"Each deployment is a mental, physical and emotional roller coaster," said Colonel Cournoyer. "I'm going to try to relay this to our squadron to advocate each Wingman to enjoy the good times with your friends and to help each other during the rough days. Work hard, keep a positive attitude and have fun and we'll all get through this together and grow from this experience"
The colonel stated one his goals while deployed here was to get all seven 3-level Airmen through their Career Development Course while they are here.
Another goal of his is to increase accountability of all our assets and complete reorganization of the 447th ECS to meet the new roles and functions of the objective Air Force communications squadron.
"We are in the middle of realigning work centers and implementing new Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC). We are breaking from status quo and developing Airmen without impacting the customer," said the colonel.
Airmen safety is also one of the colonel's goals. "On and off duty, try our best to get each Airmen through this deployment unharmed. My goal is for everyone to get home safe with no preventable injuries."
The colonel has a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. He has earned several awards to include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal and Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
"It's an honor to command a great squadron like the 447th ECS in a time of war. I look forward to the next six months with the men and women of Sather Air Base," Colonel Cournoyer said.
Col. Veit will resume command of the 5th Combat Communications Squadron Support Squadron at Robins Air Force Base, Ga.
