COURSE: WENG 555 Airfield Pavement Construction Inspection
OBJECTIVE: For each student to comprehend and be able to apply the basic principles of pavement technology and Quality Control/Quality Assurance to airfield pavement inspection. DESCRIPTION: This course increases student's ability to implement quality assurance/quality control measures during the design and construction of airfield pavements. The course is based on Unified Facility Guide Specifications (UFGS). It draws from industry standard pavement construction practices and applies them to Air Force airfield projects. The course is broken into four general areas. These include general inspection and contract management; aggregate fundamentals, base and subbase; asphalt mix design and paving operations; concrete mix design and paving operations. Comprehensive case studies and quizzes provide reinforcement of the material covered in the classroom. PRIMARY AUDIENCE: Chief Construction Management, Construction Management Inspector, Pavement Inspector, Civil Engineer Junior Officers, Pavement Engineer, Civil Design Engineer SECONDARY AUDIENCE: Pavement Maintenance Supervisor, Heavy Equipment Operators GRADE: Officers: Yes (O1-O3); Enlisted: Yes (E4-E8); Civilians: Yes (GS7-13, WS9-14, WL7-11, and WG7-11) PREREQUISITES: There are no pre-requisites for this course. Students should plan on work outside of duty hours to complete homework assignments and quizzes. Time will not be available during the duty hours for completion of assigments. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This course is designed for individuals who are directly involved with the inspection of airfield pavement construction/repair projects. The course is not intended for those performing in-house pavement repairs. However, the information learned in the course is useful for anybody performing any type of pavement inspection or construction.
