Summer Internships - Activities

Research Environment

The summer interns will be fully involved in AFIT's Graduate School of Engineering & Management Departments and a high value is placed upon their research participation. Based upon the intern's academic background and research experience, he/she will be invited to work in cooperation with an AFIT individual faculty member and/or research group. The host research group will provide the intern with necessary supplies, equipment, space, and training to carry out an assigned project. Research groups in the department typically consist of two to six graduate students (including MS & Ph.D. students).

Associated Activities

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is home to some of the most highly regarded military research facilities in the world. As such, interns may also be provided the opportunity to participate in research activities conducted at these facilities, many of which are sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory. In addition, scheduled intern activities may include visits to other research sites of interest on Wright-Patterson AFB and the surrounding community.

Experiences Outside the Academic Setting

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is home to over 20,000 Air Force employees. The base is located a few minutes north-east of Dayton, Ohio, a cosmopolitan Midwestern city. Cultural offerings within Dayton include professional theater, concerts, nightclubs, art galleries, and special expositions. Wright-Patterson AFB itself has outstanding sports and conditioning facilities. Equipment rental is available and outdoor activities are regularly organized events. AFIT typically fields several base-wide intramural sports teams and many other related activities are available directly from the AFIT complex. An added summer attraction is the acclaimed Dayton International Air Show, held at the Dayton International Airport during each July.
