Welcome to Engineering Physics Department
Welcome to the Optical Science and Engineering Program

Welcome to Optical Science and Engineering! Our Graduate Optical Science and Engineering and program is primarily designed to provide a student the knowledge of optics and laser technology necessary for work in the fields of optical science and engineering. This program is targeted at students with undergraduate backgrounds, physics, physical science, or other engineering disciplines.

The Graduate Optical Science and Engineering program offers a diverse and challenging curriculum leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Check out AFIT Graduate Catalog detailed degree information. The academic foundation of our program comes from an initial optics course, followed by four optical engineering core courses that cover the physics of the generation, propagation and detection of electromagnetic radiation, a graduate optical engineering laboratory, and finally, a higher level optical engineering course for depth.

The curriculum is rounded out by additional elective courses which may be chosen from additional optical engineering or related physics or electrical engineering courses. Research is the educational capstone of both graduate degrees, with the MS culminating in a thesis and the PhD in a dissertation. Our research interests are focused on addressing technical challenges facing the Air Force and Department of Defense, with recent areas including adaptive optics, hyper-spectral imaging, infrared signatures, laser beam propagation through turbulent media, Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MOEMS), non-mechanical beam steering, polarimetry, semiconductor opto-electronic materials and devices, and transformational optics. Please review the recent theses and dissertations topics that describe the breadth, excitement and significance of our activity.
