The Medical and Dental Residencies/Fellowships Program is responsible for managing approximately 170 physicians and dentists selected for sponsored civilian training programs. (AFIT also manages a few officers training in sister service programs as well.) These officers train in over 90 different universities and healthcare institutions nation-wide. Affected officers earn their active duty pay and benefits while they train in civilian training programs. In exchange for this sponsored training opportunity, officers incur an active duty service commitment. Officers interested in learning more about this coveted training sponsorship should contact their Air Force Personnel Center’s Education Offices.

Every year, the Air Force projects how many physicians in each specialty are required to meet the needs of the Air Force Medical Service (AFMS). This process, called "forecasting", is completed approximately June of each year by the Integrated Forecast Board (IFB). (Please note, the IFB training requirements are not determined by AFIT). The number of physician requirements forecasted for each specialty is posted annually (around July timeframe) on the Knowledge Exchange's Physician Education Homepage as well as the number of training positions available in that specialty for that year's Joint Service Graduate Medical Education Selection Board (JSGMESB).
The Medical Corps Newsletter is available to you for more information at any time.
Dental specialties in training include: Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Pathology, Periodontics, Dental Radiology, Pediatric Dentistry, Orofacial Pain, and many others.
Training specialty requirements and students selected for training are NOT determined by AFIT. The Air Force's central Integrated Forecast Board meets in early summer each year to determine specialty training requirements. After requirements are determined, central selection boards are held to determine who will be trained in these selected training quotas.
Interested officers should refer to the AFPC website to learn more about this highly competitive selection process.
