The Directed Energy Professional Society Summer Internship (DESI) is a Summer program that hosts both undergraduate and graduate students through the High Energy Laser Joint Technology Office’s Summer 2004 Visiting Scholar Program. The DESI programs introduce students to high energy laser and high power microwave weapons technologies and immerses the student in a dynamic academic research environment. The summer interns will be fully involved in AFIT's Center for Directed Energy and a high value is placed upon their research participation. Based upon the intern's academic background and research experience, he/she will be invited to work in cooperation with an AFIT individual faculty member and/or research group. Research groups in the Center for Directed Energy typically consist of two to six graduate students (including MS & PhD students). We anticipate 5 of these awards; therefore, applications should be completed in as timely a manner as possible.
Please note that this opportunity is open to U.S. citizens only.

The DESI program is administered in conjunction with either the AFIT Excellence in Engineering & Science Summer Internship (E2S2I) or the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF REU) programs discussed below. Stipends and living arrangements are different for the ESSI and NSF REU programs and applicants should indicate a preference for temporary government employment with no housing, or stipend with on-campus housing. This unique educational experience is open to undergraduate students majoring in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, engineering physics, operational sciences, or a relevant related area of study. Also, students who have recently completed an undergraduate degree in one of these disciplines are encouraged to apply, provided the pursuit of appropriate graduate studies in Fall 2004 are planned. The student intern selection criteria include: reference letters; transcript indicating academic field and level of achievement; and match between student interests and available projects.
There are a limited number of these awards available; therefore, applications should be completed in as timely a manner as possible. Civilian participants will be employed at Step 1 of Grade GS-04 or GS-05 of the federal General Schedule, depending upon qualifications and/or experience. Current hourly salaries, including locality pay for the Dayton area, are published by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, available at http://www.opm.gov/oca/04tables/html/day_h.asp.
Arranging for housing is the responsibility of the intern. Apartment guides and phone numbers for local housing may be obtained through the WPAFB Housing Office (937-257-6547). If you wish to room with another intern, please indicate this on your application, along with explicit permission to provide your name and contact information to other EESI applicants.
