Research is properly a central role of the modern university. The ongoing media dialog about the conflict between research and teaching is based upon a misconception about how research at a university works and what teaching means. Typically, research involves a project that directly includes students. Students need to be taught how to do research and the format is the age-old apprenticeship method. I take a strong interest in the research experience of all students with whom I come in contact. This interest has a selfish component - the quality and diversity of work I wish to undertake is impossible without student partners. My view is that the best research is not centered around the faculty investigator’s agenda, but rather on student development and mentoring. Both lead to good research, but one builds more future leaders.
The development of new knowledge is not complete until the research community at large is informed. Key publications can be cited for decades. Before AFIT, I worked in a major metropolitan university in the western USA with many business relations with industry (many of our graduate students were already employed in local companies) as well as the traditional academic ties to federal agencies. I enjoy working with student partners directly funded by a company or government agency as much as I do working with one on deliverables for a project for which I have secured external funding. Over 100 peer-reviewed publications are in print with my name and student coauthors. I also believe strongly in collaborating with colleagues in both specialized and interdisciplinary research. Almost all my published refereed papers and sponsored project reports are coauthored with students and colleagues. Teaming works.
As an academic, I am more interested in what entities in a system do than I am in determining what the entities are. I seek unifying descriptions of types of entity behavior. Then I seek ways to make the behavior optimally useful. My background and interests are in industrial and systems engineering, particularly operations research. I am interested in heuristics and approximations as well as formal and exact methods.
As an engineer, I seek design methods to enable the realization of successful systems. To catch my interest, these systems typically have both an uncertainty component that requires probability theory and a planning component that requires rule-based or optimization theory. Often these systems experience non-steady-state excursions or peak loading.
The tools I have invented over the years in this quest to unify the modeling of entity flow draw most notably from discrete- and continuous-time Markov chains, queueing and queueing networks, discrete event simulation, simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, object-oriented thinking, cluster analysis, decision analysis, regression, and reliability theory. I teach many of those, too.
