Department of Engineering Physics
The Department of Engineering Physics (ENP) offers a diverse set of experimental and computational internship opportunities directly supporting DoD STEM deliverables both through the AFIT E2S2I Summer Program and through the Southwest Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) Student Research Program. Both opportunities provide individuals a “full immersion” experience in research directly impacting DoD STEM deliverables focused on solutions to DoD problems. It must be noted that these opportunities are open only to US Citizens.
The Directed Energy Summer Internship (DESI) is managed by the Center for Directed Energy. DESI is noted within the DoD High Energy Laser community as one of the premier programs in the country for introducing and engaging undergrad STEM students in directed energy (high power laser and microwave enabling technologies). Applicants to E2S2I with an interest in directed energy technologies are considered for this internship.
E2S2I internships within ENP are also available in the disciplines of:
A varied mix of computational and experimental positions are generally available. The E2S2I Program is an ideal opportunity to experience DoD research, as well as explore graduate educational opportunities within ENP and AFIT.
ENP research assistantships in DoD STEM are also available on a 12 month basis to Dayton area college and university students at both the undergraduate and graduate level. These opportunities are posted through SOCHE. Students are hired by ENP faculty to assist in the execution of externally funded research efforts. The majority of these research assistantships are part-time positions during the school year, and many transition into full-time opportunities during the summer.
