1 Does not count toward earned credit hours nor do they affect GPA. The grades “IP” and “P” are given for satisfactory progress in thesis and dissertation research courses.

2 Automatically converted to F if the remaining course requirements are not resolved by week six of the next academic quarter. For research courses, the academic advisor, in coordination with the Dean, will determine the resolution deadline.

3 Please see your instructor as soon as possible.

4 Grades apply only to pass/fail courses.

Incomplete (I) grades may be given for failure to complete the required work in a course (subject to approval by the Dean). For regular courses, incomplete grades are automatically converted to F if the remaining course requirements are not resolved by week six of the next academic quarter.

For thesis coursework, the academic advisor, in coordination with the Dean, will determine the resolution deadline. Students who have not completed their thesis requirements before leaving AFIT may be awarded a grade of I. The student's advisor will submit a letter through his department head to the Dean requesting approval for the I grade. The letter will also include a deadline for resolution of the I grade. A copy of this letter will be provided to the student and the Registrar's Office. An I grade is changed to the grade of F if unresolved by the established suspense date.

In Progress (IP) grades are given for a course of study, independent studies, directed studies, or research programs extending beyond a single quarter or grading period. IP grades do not count toward earned hours nor do they affect GPA. Students will receive a letter grade in the quarter when work is scheduled to be completed.

Progress (P) grades indicate satisfactory progress toward completion of the dissertation.

Withdrawals (W) Withdrawn Passing (WP) and Withdrawn Failing (WF) grades

Students who drop a course during the third week to the end of the fifth week will receive the grade of “W” (no record of attendance is maintained for students who drop courses during the first two weeks of the term).

Students dropping a course during week six through the end of the eighth week will receive a grade of “WF” or “WP”. Normally drops are not permitted after the eight week of the term.

Appeal of Grades
A student who feels that an assigned grade is other than the grade earned must first discuss the matter with the course instructor to determine if the discrepancy is caused by error or misunderstanding. If the complaint is not satisfactorily answered by the instructor, and the student feels that an error has not been corrected or that the assigned grade was capriciously or unfairly determined, the student may appeal the decision to the head of the department in which the course is offered. After discussing the matter with the student, the head will consult with the course instructor and report a decision to the student. The final authority in the determination of the grade, however, rests with the course instructor.
