Interns must be U.S. citizens and be actively pursuing an advanced technical degree (baccalaureate, masters, doctorate) from an accredited degree-granting institution.

dates.
What date will I need to start my internship and how long does it last?
The dates you will work from and to are flexible. It is recommended that you stay for a 12 week period over the summer months.
Are there other summer employment opportunities at Wright-Patterson AFB?
Yes. A good place for further information is https://wrightpattjobs.wpafb.af.mil/.
Where will I stay?
Interns are responsible for finding their own housing. Most interns either stay with family or friends in the Dayton area or rent an apartment within a few miles of Wright-Patterson AFB (WPAFB). Apartment guides and phone numbers for local housing may be obtained through the WPAFB Housing Office (937-257-6547). If you wish to room with another intern, please indicate this on your application, along with explicit permission to provide your name and contact information to other EESI applicants.
Will my room and board be paid for?
No. AFIT does not pay for your room and board; these will be your responsibility.
What is the salary?
You will be hired at Step 1 of the GS-04 or GS-05 General Scale with Dayton OH locality pay, depending on qualifications.
How many hours per week will I be working?
You will be working an average of 40 hours/week. You will have weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and government holidays off from work.
How often will I be paid?
Every other week you will receive an electronic deposit to your bank account for certain pay.
Will travel, food or lodging expenses be paid?
No.
Will taxes be withheld?
Yes, you will have to complete a W-4 form.
Is medical coverage provided?
No. You must make your own arrangements for medical coverage.
Is the program sponsored by Air Force ROTC or Air Force Recruiting?
No.
I am in ROTC. Will I be wearing my uniform to work?
No. Interns are temporary civilian employees of the federal government. Civilian attire is appropriate. Casual outfits such as a pair of slacks (or skirt) with a nice dress shirt is recommended to be worn. Dressier clothes may be needed for particular events.
Do you require an official or unofficial transcript?
An official transcript is required.
Can I fax my application?
No! Electronic applications only.
If my university does not calculate a major GPA, should I calculate it myself?
Yes. (On-Line GPA Calculator)
How do I obtain course credit?
You must arrange it through your own university.
What am I going to be doing as an intern?
You will be working for an AFIT professor and your job will be individual to that professor’s needs. You may be working in labs, conducting research, collecting data, or writing programs. There is no set limitation to what you will be doing as an intern.
What benefits will I get from the program?
This program is beneficial to both ROTC and non-ROTC students. ROTC students will have the benefit of working on base as well as working in a military environment (possibly working for an active duty officer), and making the kinds of connections that could be helpful to your career. Non-ROTC students will be exposed to the military, work for an AFIT professor, and gain experience in their field of study. Interns may also have the benefit of working with AFIT Masters or Doctorate students.
Will I have access to a weight room/gym facilities?
Yes. There are gym facilities in both the areas of where you will be working and where you will be living (if on base). A military ID card will let you in to these facilities. If you do not have a military ID, a military ID card holder can sign you in (though at certain facilities, such as the pool, an additional charge may be required) or you can receive a pass from the VOQ management.
What is there to do in Dayton?
Dayton has many attractions that may be of interest to you. There are free concerts, ticketed concerts, all kinds of restaurants, and amusement parks within Ohio, not to mention all of the base activities that go on. The base has a 4th of July celebration, athletic activities, and many others. Don’t miss out on the Dayton Air Show or the Air Force Museum! WPAFB has shopping centers and movie theatres within only a few minutes driving time.
I’m driving my car to WPAFB. Do I need to register
it on base?
Yes. This process will take place during your first day of work when you in-process. You will get a sticker to put on your car that allows you on base. Make sure to bring your current registration. Even if you have a DoD sticker on your car, it still must be registered for WPAFB.
I will not have my own transportation while I am there. Will it be difficult for me to get to and from work?
Maybe! The area you will be working at is about five miles from the area you will be living (if on base). There will be many other interns who work with you and live where you live, so getting transportation to and from where you live and work shouldn’t be a problem.
Will interns take part in any tours on base?
Yes. There are many labs and research centers on base that you will have the opportunity to see. These will be scheduled throughout the summer.
