List of Courses and Program Structure

For a complete list of courses offered in the SPDP, scroll to the bottom of this page (links are also available for further information about a particular course).

The SPDP courses cover topics such as Software Project Management, Object-Oriented Analysis & Design, Requirements Analysis, Software Systems Maintenance, and Testing. These courses can be taken as a comprehensive program, or a la carte.

The SPDP distance-learning courses can be taken in numerical order, of course, but there is no requirement to do so. In some cases, there is no reason to try to take them in order at all. A couple of exceptions: it would make sense to take CSE 481 (an overview of the software lifecycle) before taking CSE 482 - 485 (more in-depth views of particular phases of the lifecycle). Also, CSE 489 assumes that students have some knowledge of the topics covered in CSE 487 and CSE 488. But, for the most part, the courses do not have prerequisites, and can be taken in an order that best accommodates your schedule and educational needs.

CSE 496, Software Engineering Practicum, is a three-week capstone course conducted in residence at AFIT. In this course, students from various bases work as a team in a lab setting, applying the concepts taught in the previous SPDP courses. Previous CSE 496 students have consistently said this course proved to be a very valuable experience, providing an opportunity to solidify the concepts taught in the distance learning format. We will continue to offer CSE 496 as the culminating educational experience for the SPDP. AFIT does pay TDY expenses for U.S. Air Force Military & Civilian students attending CSE 496. Non-U.S.A.F. personnel may enroll, but their organization will need to fund the TDY.
