Student Handbook

The following policies apply to you, the student, and your conduct while attending a class offered by the School of Systems and Logistics, Air Force Institute of Technology.

The intent of these policies is to create an environment in which all students can receive the maximum benefit from this educational experience.

  • For ease of reference, the policies are listed by subject , in alphabetical order.
  • Your instructor will review each policy during the course orientation.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about what is expected of you, talk to your instructor.
Our goal is to help you become a more knowledgeable, more capable professional.

    Academic Freedom and Non-Attribution

Effective learning requires an open exchange of ideas. Policies of academic freedom and non-attribution create an environment where students and faculty are able to engage in a meaningful dialogue without fear of retribution.

  • A policy of academic freedom means that you may express your opinions concerning current or proposed policies, regulations and procedures openly and honestly. It does not mean that you may attack the character, personality or other personal attributes of any individual. Personal attacks will not be tolerated.
  • A policy of non-attribution means that what you say in class will not be attributed to you if and when your thoughts or ideas are repeated outside of class.
  • The policies of academic freedom and non-attribution require that we treat each other with mutual respect as professionals. Students should expect to be treated as professionals by our faculty and staff and should be prepared to treat each other in like manner.

    Attendance

You are required to be in class during all class sessions. Students attending resident or on-site offerings are assigned full-time to AFIT for the duration of the course. In accordance with DoDI 5020.16, your supervisor should relieve you from all job responsibilities during the duration of the course.

The instructor will tell you the start and end times for all class sessions, breaks and lunch. Absences from class will normally not be approved except in cases of emergencies. During class, the instructor may approve excused absences on a case-by-case basis. After class hours, the class leader may also grant an excused absence in the event the instructor cannot be reached.
  • If circumstances require that a student miss more than 5% of the course, the student may be disenrolled.
  • Unexcused absences, to include excessive tardiness, will not be tolerated and will result in disenrollment from class.
  • If, during the course, you plan an overnight trip to a destination more than 50 miles from where the course is being taught, you must provide advanced notice to the instructor or the class leader if the instructor is not available.

    Your notice should identify:
  • when and where you are going
  • when you expect to return
  • where you can be reached during your absence

    Care of Facilities

As a government employee, you have a fiduciary responsibility for the care and preservation of government property and facilities. Perhaps more important, the classroom represents a significant part of your learning environment. A classroom that is disorderly and cluttered with litter is a distraction that interferes with effective learning.
  • The instructor will tell you whether or not food and drink is allowed in the classroom.
  • If drinks are allowed, they must be kept in covered containers at all times.
  • All trash must be placed in appropriate containers.
  • Many of our classrooms are used at night by the base education office for classes offered to the general Wright-Paterson AFB population.
  • Consequently, you should remove all materials when you leave at the end of the day.
  • Materials left behind may not be there when you return the next morning.

    Cheating

Cheating of any sort will not be tolerated.
  • The use of any unauthorized assistance to complete any task or assignment that is evaluated for purposes of establishing your grade is absolutely prohibited.
  • Providing unauthorized assistance to another individual is likewise prohibited.
Such actions will result in immediate termination of your enrollment and dismissal from class.

    Disaster Preparedness

Your instructor will inform you of any severe weather alerts. In the event of a tornado warning, you are to proceed to the area within the building designated as a tornado shelter. Your instructor will tell you where this area is located during your course orientation. In the event of a fire alarm, you must evacuate the building and move a safe distance away from the structure. Your instructor will also review evacuation procedures during the course orientation.

    Dress Code - Updated 24 Feb 2006

    To all AFIT/LS PCE Students,
A new policy from HAF and AETC has allowed the wear of BDUs and Flight Suits as the new daily uniform. AFIT/LS will adhere to this new policy effective immediately.

Please note the following guidance is for TDY students attending AFIT/LS PCE courses:
Students may wear either BDUs and Flight Suits OR Blues combinations of uniforms to any AFIT/LS PCE course. Though BDU/Flight Suits are authorized for daily wear they can be cumbersome to pack. Therefore, consideration is extended to allow AF students the option of either uniform combination. Bring only one of the uniform combinations as both are unnecessary. Formal graduations ceremonies are not part of the AFIT/LS PCE program so dress blues are not required. International and Foreign Students as well as Sister Service Students should wear their appropriate authorized uniform combinations.

    Grades

All students will receive a grade of Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory that will become part of their official personnel records.
  • If the course is approved for academic credit by AFIT, students will also receive a letter grade.
  • Passing letter grades include A through D.
  • A student who fails the course will receive a grade of F.
  • During the course orientation, your instructor will discuss how your performance will be evaluated and the standards used to determine your grade.
  • All course requirements must be met for a student to satisfactorily complete a course.
INCOMPLETE : In some instances, an instructor may, in lieu of a grade, designate that a student has not completed all course requirements.
  • The instructor will specify the remaining activities to be performed and the time allotted for the requirements to be met.
  • If these activities are not accomplished in a satisfactory manner within the time allotted, the student will receive a failing grade.
    Facts you should know:
  • Your letter grade does not become part of your official personnel records.
  • It is recorded on an AFIT transcript and that, under normal circumstances, can only be accessed by you.
  • Your supervisors cannot see your letter grade unless you reveal it to them.

    Harassment

No individual, under any circumstances should be subjected to harassment. A hostile environment is detrimental to the learning process and will not be tolerated. Certain types of harassment, such as harassment due to race, religion, national origin or gender are against public law, policy and regulation. However, any behavior that is disruptive to the class or hinders the learning experience of the other students will not be tolerated and could also lead to dismissal from the course. Students and faculty alike should treat each other with dignity and respect.

AFIT policy is that learning requires a supportive environment and no harassment of a personal nature will be tolerated.

    Smoking

The AFIT complex of buildings have been designated as non-smoking facilities.
  • All uses of tobacco products are prohibited except in designated areas.
  • This prohibition also applies to all onsite classrooms.
  • Your instructor will provide the location of designated smoking areas during the course orientation.
