AFIT Volunteers Make a Difference!
Posted Tuesday, May 13, 2014

Every year charities apply to participate with the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). In accordance with regulations, volunteers from the Federal workforce are required to review applications and determine eligibility, following guidelines set forth by Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

This enormous task was successful for the Miami Valley CFC because of dedicated volunteers from AFIT. Our students and staff who contributed their expertise and time to review applications this year were:

  • Maj Seth Swift, Department of Engineering Physics (AFIT/ENP)
  • Capt Benjamin Lee, Department of Mathematics & Statistics (AFIT/ENC)
  • Capt Jesse Lynn, Department of Mathematics & Statistics (AFIT/ENC)
  • Capt David Smalenberger, Department of Operational Sciences (AFIT/ENS)
  • 2d Lt Amy Abraham, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (AFIT/ENG)
  • MSgt Misti Rodriguez, School of Systems & Logistics (AFIT/LSA)

MSgt Kelly Luchkiw, AFIT Commandant’s Action Group (AFIT/CCX), organized the call for volunteers and coordinated the sign up with Miami Valley CFC staff.

Collectively, the AFIT team volunteered 38.25 of the 210 total hours logged for this year’s reviews! AFIT volunteers’ innate ability to focus on the responsibility and provide determinations in accordance with OPM’s criteria were essential to the entire process.

Capt Ben Lee has generously committed much volunteer time to Miami Valley CFC. He is the brain trust behind the significant efforts that have successfully streamlined the application review process. Capt Lee’s vision has enabled local application reviews to be accomplished…effectively!… in 210 hours, down from 370 hours in 2011. His dedication, thoughtfulness and insights have ensured a meaningful experience for all volunteers. Capt Lee also served as a CFC Loaned Executive in 2011.

Dr. Ron Reynolds, Commandant, DISAM, and Miami Valley CFC board chair, said, “Volunteering is a noble commitment. We sincerely appreciate and value the year-round support AFIT volunteers provide our CFC.”

This year’s campaign dates are 1 October – 14 November 2014. AFIT will soon be recruiting volunteers to assist with the campaign. To learn more about this unique and rewarding opportunity, contact Miami Valley CFC: miamivalleycfc@us.af.mil Direct: 937-257-0292.
