AFIT's Graduate School of Engineering and Management, Department of Operational Sciences, completes another successful Enterprise Logistics Executive Capstone Course

The Department of Operational Sciences, within AFIT's Graduate School of Engineering and Management, recently completed another successful offering of the Enterprise Logistics Executive Capstone Course (WLOG 500) - a seminar on best practices for DoD integrated logistics support and supply chain management professionals.

Based on the smiles in the photo of the class and the feedback that they provided, the participants were very pleased with the class:

  • "This was a great course and I would recommend it to other leaders."
  • "Fantastic course! I want the slides to provide in leadership forums in my organization."
  • "Great speakers and presentations by far the best 'group' of briefings I've experienced."
  • "Thank you for providing information, making us think and experience the full supply chain not just my niche."

The goal of the course is to provide Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) logistics senior leaders and mid-level management with a broad overview of the elements required for effective implementation of world-class DoD integrated logistics supply chain management.

This four-day intensive resident program uses presentations, group discussions, in-class exercises, team-based overnight assignments, and competitive team-based supply chain simulations. The course is designed around the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model - widely accepted by industry and the DoD - provides a proven framework that links business processes, metrics, best practices and technology to improve an organization's logistics outcomes.

A course highlight is the competitive LINKS simulation. Participants are grouped into a team of four people with different backgrounds - each group makes monthly production, sourcing, distribution, and marketing decisions needed to manufacture and sell a product. The teams compete against the other six capstone course teams.

"The simulation serves several purposes. Most importantly, it illustrates the value of an enterprise perspective for effective supply chain management." states Dr. Alan Johnson, Professor of Logistics Management within the Department of Operational Sciences. "Secondly, it provides an opportunity to examine how different strategies translate to business outcomes. Finally, the team competition is fun, which helps to reinforce the course material's value for the participants."

Participants leave with a common understanding of the components of supply chain management based on a shared terminology as well as understanding the importance of cross-functional and inter-firm integration having gained an overview of the tools necessary for successful integration and alignment.

The next two offerings of this class are scheduled for June 14-17 and September 13-16, 2016. More information is available from the course sponsor, HQ AFMC/A4P at (312) 674-0062.
