Mr. Barry J. Burton is a contract course director in the School of Systems and Logistics. He focuses on developing and teaching classes related to manufacturing maturity and risk assessment processes. He currently supports curriculum development and teaching of SYS 213, Management of the Manufacturing Readiness Process.
Mr. Burton joined the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) following civil service with the Air Force Research Lab’s (AFRL) Manufacturing and Industrial Technologies Division. At AFRL, he served as the Chair of the DoD’s Manufacturing Readiness Level Working Group, Joint Defense Manufacturing Technology Program, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense Research and Engineering for four years, led the Industrial Base Assessment and Supply Chain Risk Management programs, and served as a technical program manager for the Defense Production Act Title III Executive Agent Program Office. He is an Air Force Reserve Development Engineer officer with 26-years of active duty and part-time experience in operational, acquisitions and instructor roles including Colorado State University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). Additionally, he has non-Defense related experience in engineering and corporate supply chain management roles for a fortune 1000 manufacturing company, as well as small-business design and installation experience. He received his Master’s Degree, Engineering and Technology Management from the Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Science Degree, General Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy. He holds a practitioner’s level certification in Engineering and Technical Management.
