Ronald C. Durbin, Instructor

Ronald C. Durbin is an Instructor for the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) School of Systems and Logistics at Wright-Patterson AFB (WPAFB), Ohio. As instructor, he develops and teaches continuing education courses related to assessment and mitigation of cybersecurity risk in weapons systems.

Prior to his current assignment in AFIT/LS, Mr. Durbin served as a Risk Management Framework (RMF) subject matter expert supporting the Miniature Munitions Directorate, AFLCMC/EBM and the Air Launched Weapons Directorate, AFNWC/NDB at Eglin AFB, FL; served as an systems engineer and Information Assurance Manager for Digital Dagger, AFSOAWC/AC, Hurlburt Field, FL, during which time he deployed three thousand Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) to AFSOC aircrews, developed a global support infrastructure, and authored key policies and procedures for EFB use and support; acted as author, technical editor, and instructor for a commercial training company on over twenty 4-5 day intensive training events taught world-wide on all aspects of deploying Microsoft operating systems in an enterprise environment; provided information technology consulting services for a variety of DoD support contractors and commercial clients; and completed a 24-year career in the US Air Force in the grade of Lieutenant Colonel.

Courses Taught

SYS341, Cyber Risk Assessment of Weapon System Platform IT (PIT)

SYS341 is an intensive 40-hour, instructor-led course that includes eight small-group exercises in which attendees apply principles learned in the class to a representative case study weapon system.

WKSP0690, Cyber Risk Assessment of Weapon System Platform IT (PIT) Workshop

WKSP0690 is a 20-hour, instructor-led workshop delivered in daily 2-hour segments over a 2 week period. WKSP0690 content largely mirrors SYS341 but does not include small-group activities. WKSP0690 is offered for individuals whose job responsibilities preclude a full week of uninterrupted attendance in SYS341.

Areas of Interest and Consulting

Partnering with AFLCMC/EZA to develop methods for assessing and mitigating cybersecurity risk of Air Force weapons.

Active member in Cyber Resiliency Office for Weapon Systems (CROWS) Line of Action 3 (LOA-3) initiatives to build education for the Air Force’s cyber workforce.

Working with AFIT/ENS to apply blockchain and related technologies to securing the weapon system supply chain.
