Human Systems Integration

Human Systems Integration

Program Description

The Department of Systems Engineering and Management offers a Human Systems Integration Certificate (HSI), to both in-resident and distance learning (DL) students, which provides a set of graduate level courses to support the Department of the Air Force and DoD-wide focus on Human Factors and Human Systems Integration (HSI). These courses are intended to aid individual contributions apply HSI best practices across the DoD. The HSC may be earned as a minor concentration as part of most other AFIT programs or accomplished independently entirely via distance learning.

Admissions Requirements

The general requirements for admission to the HSI certificate program are as follows:

Degree:  A bachelor’s degree in engineering (e.g., Aeronautical, Astronautical, Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering), a Science Degree or another bachelor degree with significant program management experience is required.

Mathematics Courses: Calculus I and II are required.

GPA: Undergraduate GPA ≥ 3.0 overall

The GRE is not required for certificate-seeking students, unless the student intends to also pursue a master’s or PhD degree, in which case the graduate degree admission criteria will apply. Waivers to the above criteria may be granted (on an individual basis) by the Department of Systems Engineering and Management. Therefore, individuals whose academic credentials fall below any of the above criteria may apply.

Waivers to the above criteria may be granted on a case-by-case basis. Therefore, individuals whose academic credentials fall below any of the above criteria are encouraged to apply.

Outcomes & Objectives

Student Outcomes (SOs)

The following student outcomes are those competencies that students are expected to achieve by the completion of the program:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of Human Systems Integration and the role of the HSI professional in the systems engineering processes.

  • Evaluate contemporary human factors problems of interest to the DoD, and design process and solutions utilizing detailed methods in an area of specialization.

  • Apply the requisite tools to make systems trades among the HSI domains.

  • Effectively communicate technically complex ideas and concepts in written and oral formats.

Program Outcomes (POs)

The HSI Certificate Program takes students with traditional science or engineering backgrounds and produces graduates who can effectively use the tools and knowledge of the Human Systems Integration Domains (human factors, occupational health, safety, manpower, personnel, training, and survivability) to approach and analyze the design of systems for human use.

  • The HSI graduates will understand the systems engineering process and the role of the human-centered design disciplines within the systems engineering process.

  • HSI graduates will demonstrate application of HSI evaluation, design, and experimental processes on contemporary problems of interest to the DoD.

  • HSI graduates will understand many of the tools and activities of the human factors engineer and other human systems integration oriented disciplines in the design of complex human-machine systems.

  • HSI graduates will be able to identify deficiencies and/or gaps in the current human systems integration body of knowledge, and will be capable of proposing new approaches to bridge these gaps.

  • HSI graduates will demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate technically complex ideas and concepts in both spoken and written formats.

Degree Information

Degree Type: Certificate

Delivery Method: In-Residence and Distance Learning

Degree Requirements

To be awarded the HSI certificate, students must complete four courses as specified below. Credits for each course are indicated in parentheses. If taking one course per quarter, this program can be completed in 12 months.

Core Courses (3 courses, 12 credits):  These courses provide a common breadth of knowledge and the basic building blocks for the HSI professional. These courses include HFEN 560: Human Factors Engineering, HFEN 565: Human Systems Domains, HFEN 668: Integration of Human Considerations During Acquisition.

Electives (1 course, 4 credits):  This course provides additional depth in the human systems integration. Eligible courses include HFEN 620: Human Performance Modeling, HFEN 663: Human Computer Interaction, HFEN 665: Human-Agent Interaction and HFEN 670: Human Interaction Technologies.

The HSI certificate is not available to students in the SE program or the GEM program.
