Program Description

The Department of Systems Engineering and Management offers a doctoral program which leads to the award of a Doctor of Philosophy degree. The program is a research-focused degree that recognizes mastery in a field, a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, and the dissemination of significant and original contributions to the body of knowledge. The Graduate School of Engineering and Management specifies the degree requirements for the school’s doctoral program.

The program is primarily targeted at active duty Air Force officers who are assigned in residence by Air Force Personnel Command (AFPC). In addition, the program is available to part-time military and civilians who are locally available to take courses, conduct research, and satisfy Faculty Council doctoral policies.

Admissions Requirements

Degree Required: An engineering Master's degree (Aeronautical, Astronautics, Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering). Other relevant Master's degrees, together with an engineering BS, may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Test Required: GRE 156V/151Q (within the last five years)

GPA Required: 3.50 (MS); 3.00 (BS)

Waivers to the above criteria may be granted (on an individual basis) by the Department of Systems and Engineering Management. Therefore, individuals whose academic credentials fall below any of the above criteria may still apply.

  • Mathematics (8 hours)
  • Dissertation research (48 hours)
  • Admission to candidacy: One year before graduation
  • Full time study:Three out of four contiguous quarters. For off campus students, the full-time study may be waived by the Dean with a good-faith commitment by student's home office to provide a period for Ph.D immersion.
  • Present dissertation at a public defense
