Department of Nuclear Command, Control and Communications (NC3) Studies

The Air Force Institute of Technology's (AFIT) School of Strategic Force Studies (SoSFS) has conducted NC3 Professional Continuing Education (PCE) since 2020. Born from an innovatively formed partnership between AETC/A3N, AF NC3 Center, and Louisiana Tech University's Research Institute, the AETC/AFIT NC3 Education Activity was formed by the cumulative pronouncements by the National Defense Strategy and Nuclear Posture Review to the various AF nuclear enterprise "blue ribbon panel" reports that NC3 awareness and education has been identified as lacking but essential to developing in our Nuclear Command, Control and Communications (NC3) Airmen. The 2019 NDAA, SEC. 1668: "shall develop a plan to train, educate, manage, and track officers of the Armed Forces in nuclear command, control, and communications." The NC3 Education Activity is a series of laddered short PCE courses designed to fill this education and experience gap and will increase the NC3 and Nuclear deterrence acumen for all Airmen. Goals are to: 1) meet unique education requirements for a professional NC3/nuclear enterprise workforce; 2) develop and deliver novel NC3 education courses of instruction; 3) serve as a center of excellence/influence for professional NC3 education. On August 1, 2020 AFIT's SoSFS assumed operational control of the NC3 Education Activity which is now the Department of Nuclear Command, Control and Communications (NC3) Studies, established at Barksdale AFB, LA.
