In March 1948, the newly established Air Force Institute of Technology’s Air Installations Special Staff School, known today as The Civil Engineer School, held its first class consisting of 31 students ranging in rank from First Lieutenant to Lieutenant Colonel.
Designed to train officers for base-level Air Installations duty, the 12-week Air Installations Engineering Special Staff Officer Course covered subjects such as buildings and structures, master planning, cost accounting, property and supply, and preventive maintenance.
Today, The Civil Engineer School educates more than 12,000 students in the Department of the Air Force and Joint Services per year with more than 300 course offerings to enable effective engineers. Learn more at www.afit.edu/ce.
