AFIT faculty member receives international early career award

Posted Tuesday, August 24, 2021

Lieutenant Colonel Brian Bohan received the 2021 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI) Dilip R. Ballal Early Career Award. The award is competitively selected from the international community with one recipient per year and is presented to the individual who has made significant contributions in the gas turbine industry within the first five years of their career.

“The award brings international recognition to AFIT, and I am honored to be the recipient this year,” said Bohan.

Bohan is an assistant professor of aeronautical engineering within AFIT’s Graduate School of Engineering and Management. He teaches courses in advanced turbomachinery, applied computational fluid dynamics, and aircraft design. He has authored over 30 technical journal and conference publications, three self-published genealogy books, and is a peer-reviewer for IGTI conference papers and ASME and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Journals.

“I am delighted to receive the great news of this prestigious award from ASME, one of the foundational organizations for the practice and advancement of engineering,” said Dr. Adedeji Badiru, dean of the Graduate School of Engineering and Management. “The premise of the award confirms that Lieutenant Colonel Brian Bohan is a fast-tracker of the good contributions of engineering. I am proud of him and his teammates, who supported him through the technical contributions to the gas turbine industry.”

Bohan’s research is focused on compact gas-turbine combustion, gas-turbine engine controls, heat transfer, fluidic oscillating devices, and alternate methods and materials for manufacturing turbomachinery. A new compact gas-turbine engine configuration he designed that is ideal for power generation is currently patent pending.

Dr. Marc Polanka, AFIT professor of aeronautics, nominated Bohan for the award. “Brian has demonstrated exceptional leadership and service, coupled with outstanding technical achievement and innovation during the time I have interacted with him at AFIT as his advisor and mentor,” said Polanka.

“Where Dr. Bohan has clearly shined is in his technical work and innovation,” shared Polanka. “Brian puts his passion into any endeavor he becomes involved in. He is certainly the most eager and willing individual I have had the pleasure to advise.”

Prior to his current position, Bohan served as a test program manager in the guidance and navigation field in the 746th Test Squadron, a propulsion subject matter expert in a system program office in the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, and as a deputy branch chief, program manager, and researcher in the Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) high and low speed aerodynamic configuration branches.

A double AFIT graduate, Bohan earned his master’s and doctorate in aeronautical engineering in 2011 and 2018, respectively. His master’s thesis was judged the most exceptional thesis in his graduating class earning the AFIT Commandant’s Award. He is also a graduate of the Air Force Squadron Officer School and Air Command and Staff College, and holds Air Force Acquisition Professional certifications in Systems Engineering and Test and Evaluation.

Bohan has served as a coach and mentor for aspiring engineers. He coached a FIRST Lego League Jr. team for elementary students in 2019. He was a mentor at several AFIT Engineers Week events, which is a hands-on program for middle and high school aged students and covers a wide range of engineering disciplines. He is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, Sigma Gamma Tau Aeronautical Engineering Honor Society, AIAA, and ASME.

Through all of his assignments Bohan has earned a number of awards and recognition including the AIAA Research Excellence Award, Capt. Roland R. Obenland Annual Engineering Award, and was a member of the AFRL Turbine Engine Division Team of the Year.
