AFIT to host first-ever Heritage Symposium

Posted Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Symposium logoThe Air Force Institute of Technology, in cooperation with the AFIT Foundation, is pleased to announce plans for the first-ever AFIT Heritage Symposium, which will take place 25 and 26 September 2008 on the AFIT campus in Area B. The theme for the symposium is “Reflecting on the Past...Shaping the Future.” The event offers AFIT and the Wright-Patterson AFB community a chance to look back at AFIT’s amazing accomplishments during its historic past and to celebrate AFIT’s long tradition of academic and research excellence. Symposium attendees will be able to take a glimpse into AFIT’s exciting future and hear how AFIT is preparing today to meet the new challenges of tomorrow.

The two-day event is open to anyone in the Dayton area including alumni, associates, and friends of the Institute, and will feature several keynote speakers representing some of AFIT’s most successful graduates. They will share how their AFIT education has played a critical role in their careers and why AFIT is more relevant than ever to the Air Force’s current and future combat power, including newly evolving mission areas such as cyberspace.

Says AFIT Commandant Brig. Gen. Paula G. Thornhill, “I am excited about this event and extend a personal invitation for you to attend this historic gathering of some of our most distinguished alumni and friends, who are now among the nation’s most senior military and defense leaders. This will be a prime opportunity for you to dialog with senior leaders about the Institute’s plans for the future.”

AFIT’s Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering and Management Dr. Marlin U. Thomas agrees. “This symposium offers supporters of AFIT throughout Wright-Patterson AFB and the Dayton area a unique opportunity to see and hear from some of our graduate school’s most successful alumni.”

What’s more, he points out that “with more than 700 AFIT graduates currently in the Dayton area actively employed by the US Air Force, our institution has a tremendous impact on the Dayton area’s science and technology sector. The Heritage Symposium is an exciting opportunity for the AFIT Foundation to develop even stronger ties with the numerous Friends of AFIT in the Dayton area and for the Foundation to position itself to identify opportunities for greater community involvement.”

Attendees at the symposium will be able to see AFIT’s newest addition to the campus, building 646, designed to house the Air Force’s Center for Systems Engineering and provide the Institute with several modern classroom facilities. Alumni will be able to see for themselves just how much the AFIT campus has changed over the years as the Institute has grown to become the nation’s eighth largest graduate school based on the number of degrees awarded.

During the two day event, the AFIT Foundation will host events at which one can get re-acquainted with fellow alumni and friends of AFIT, including a golf scramble and picnic luncheon. The event will culminate on Friday evening, 26 September, with the AFIT Foundation’s formal Distinguished Alumni Banquet, where we will honor the Class of 2008 inductees.

Navy Capt. Rick Scudder, AFIT’s Vice Commandant, says “the planning committee is encouraged by the base and community support we have received to date, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to campus in September.” Mark your calendars and make plans now to come to AFIT to participate in this historic convocation.
