Ribbon cut on AFIT’s new building

Posted Thursday, October 02, 2008

In a ceremony held at the Air Force Institute of Technology’s campus on Thursday, 25 September, the ribbon was officially cut on the Institute’s newest building. Building 646 is home to the Air Force Center for Systems Engineering and the AFIT Command Section.

Brig. Gen. Paula G. Thornhill, AFIT Commandant, welcomed the many guests in attendance, to include George Mooney, Air Force Center for Systems Engineering Director; Gen. Lawrence Skantze, USAF retired and AFIT Alumni Class of 1959; Rick Markwell, Army Corp of Engineers; and Col. Bradley D. Spacey, 88th Air Base Wing Commander.

“A ribbon cutting is the realization of a vision,” Thornhill said.  “This is the nexus for the Air Force when it comes to systems engineering. What’s more, it makes evident the importance of a physical environment to create a university atmosphere that shows you are world class. AFIT is a force for the future in terms of leadership and of technology, science, engineering, consultation, education, and research.”

This project increases AFIT’s overall footprint by 50,000 square feet. The new building supports the growing AFIT curriculum by housing the faculty and staff of the Center for Systems Engineering, and it also houses classrooms and laboratory facilities that enable AFIT’s graduates to conduct state-of-the art, interdisciplinary, Air Force-sponsored research.
