Department of Operational Sciences announces new graduate certificate programs

Posted Friday, January 09, 2009

The Department of Operational Sciences (AFIT/ENS) is proud to announce two new graduate certificate programs: the Certificate in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and the Test and Evaluation Certificate Program. These programs are being offered via distance learning and begin Winter Quarter 2009. Students enrolled complete certificate courses on the same quarter-schedule and timeline as the in-residence students at WPAFB assuring the quality of the content is the same. Classes include both synchronous and asynchronous course instruction and learning opportunities. Certificate students earn accredited graduate credits, typically transferrable to other universities. All classes within the certificate programs are directly applicable to the respective in-residence master’s thesis programs in ENS, creating a new path for students to attain those residence degrees. In addition, students can use these programs as a specialty track while pursuing a Master’s in Systems Engineering from AFIT, which can also be completed via distance learning.

The Certificate in Logistics and Supply Chain Management provides students with graduate level education in the fundamentals of Supply Chain Management (SCM) with particular emphasis on Department of Defense (DoD) and Air Force specific applications and lean operations related to Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century. The coursework includes analytical skill sets to address issues faced daily, including statistical data analysis and quantitative modeling. The Certificate in Logistics and Supply Chain Management is 20 credit hours and includes the following courses: Introduction to Logistics and Supply Management, Lean Operations Management, Applied Statistical Data Analysis, Quantitative Modeling, and Strategic Sourcing. The first course is designed to provide a broad perspective of the processes involved in supply chain management. This introductory class is ideal for both individuals who may be new to the field as well as experts with many years of experience. The Logistics and Supply Chain Management Certificate was created to address the needs of Air Force uniformed personnel and civilians alike. Air Force Materiel Command and the new Air Force Global Supply Center have indicated interest and are in the process of nominating students for future classes. For further information on the program, please contact Dr. William Cunningham, DSN 785-3636 ext 4283 or Maj. Ben Skipper, ext 7948.

The Test and Evaluation Certificate Program is intended to provide students a fundamental understanding of concepts required to support analysis in the Test and Evaluation (T&E) Community. Particular emphasis is given to incorporating past, present, and future Department of Defense T&E examples from all aspects of test (developmental and operational) into the curriculum. The certificate program targets individuals within the acquisition or analysis career fields working within research, developmental, or operational test stationed at engineering centers, test ranges, test centers, program offices, or headquarters. The Test and Evaluation Certificate Program is composed of 16 credit hours and includes the following courses: Introduction to Probability and Statistics, Empirical Modeling, Operational Experimentation, Reliability, Maintainability, and Supportability, and a Capstone Research Project. The Test and Evaluation Certificate Program responds directly to operational needs of the Air Force and Department of Defense. The first class represents many T&E agencies including personnel from the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, AFMC, Holloman AFB, Arnold AFB, Eglin AFB, and Edwards AFB. Additional offerings of the T&E Certificate Program are under consideration due to high initial demand. One plan under consideration is to start a secondary offering beginning in July of 2009. For further information or questions regarding this program, please contact Lt. Col. Stephen Chambal, Director of the Center for Operational Analysis, at DSN 785-6565 ext 4538.
