SPIE Awards $3000 Scholarship to AFIT Student, Mark Spencer

Posted Monday, June 28, 2010

BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA – June 21, 2010 – SPIE has awarded a $3000 Educational Scholarship in Optical Science and Engineering to Mark Spencer, Air Force Institute of Technology (Wright Patterson AFB OH USA).

Mark SpencerSpencer is pursuing his Master’s of Science in Optical Sciences and Engineering in the Department of Engineering Physics at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Under the direction of Dr. Salvatore Cusumano and Dr. Steven Fiorino in the AFIT Center for Directed Energy (CDE), his research involves the use of adaptive optics in mitigating thermal blooming effects in high energy laser propagation. Spencer is developing computational wave-optics experiments to explore the phase compensation instability (PCI) that theoretically arises when trying to correct for thermal blooming effects.

In 2010 SPIE will be awarding $323,000 in scholarships to 137 outstanding students based on their potential for long-range contribution to optics and photonics, or a related discipline. Award-winning applicants were evaluated and approved by the SPIE Scholarship Committee.

SPIE is the international optics and photonics society, founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. Serving more than 188,000 constituents from 138 countries, the Society advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent, and career and professional growth. SPIE annually organizes and sponsors approximately 25 major technical forums, exhibitions, and education programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific.
