ABET accreditation assures excellence in technology, engineering

The Air Force Institute of Technology's engineering programs recently underwent a re-accreditation review by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Dr. Todd Stewart, director and chancellor of AFIT, said the review ensures AFIT's educational excellence in the fields of engineering and technology.      " While we are accredited at the institution level by the Higher Learning Commission, we also are assessed by ABET due to our many engineering and technology programs," said Stewart.  " ABET accredits engineering and technology programs worldwide."

The many engineering programs that were reviewed include astronautical engineering, aeronautical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, systems engineering, environmental engineering  and nuclear engineering, as well as engineering management and industrial hygiene.

While the official announcement regarding the ABET reaccreditation won't be revealed until next August, the ABET reviewers held an out-briefing with the AFIT faculty and staff upon completion of the review.      " Some of the strengths of AFIT cited by the ABET team include the superb world-class instructional and research facilities," said Dr. Adedeji Badiru, dean of the Graduate  School of Engineering and Management.  " Our co-location with AFRL (Air Force Research Laboratory) and partnership with the 88th Air Base Wing gives us a unique and fortunate position among graduate schools."

ABET accreditation is determined by certain criteria, including student performance, program objectives, student outcomes, curriculum, competent faculty and adequate facilities. They have more than 1,500 dedicated volunteers in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology working to ensure excellence in higher education.

AFIT engineering student Capt. Alexander Graboski explained that this review gives his and his classmates' hard work at AFIT a bit more support.      " ABET accreditation helps show the merit of the institution and its programs on a global scale. It gives legitimacy to our degrees and qualifications when working with civilian counterparts," Graboski said.

Dr. Paul Wolf, associate dean of Academic Affairs, remarked about the high quality of the faculty.    This quality can be attributed to the unique diversity of AFIT faculty. Of the 159 faculty members, 116 have prior military service. Also, according to Badiru, there are 88 civilian and 71 military professors.

" While the report has not yet been issued, we believe we will have another very strong endorsement," said Stewart.  " We're very pleased with the way this evaluation went and are looking forward to the final report."     At AFIT, educating Airmen is a team effort.  " We depend on other organizations and experts, largely within the Air Force and Department of Defense, to ensure excellence in our programs' relevance and responsiveness to where the Air Force and DOD are going in the future," said Stewart.
