Meet the new class of AFIT students

AFIT’s Graduate School of Engineering and Management is kicking off a new academic year with a class of 226 master’s and 28 doctoral students.  The in-coming class is comprised of 219 Air Force, 10 Army, 4 Marines, 12 civilians and 9 international students.  The group includes 6 enlisted AF members at the ranks of TSgt, MSgt and SMSgt. The international students come to AFIT from Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia.  Master’s degree students will spend the next 18-months studying in programs such as Aeronautical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Operations Research.  Doctoral students will have three years to earn their degrees in fields such as Computer Science, Nuclear Engineering and Space Systems.   A quick introduction to 5 of the new students is below along with photos from their new student orientation.


2d Lt Andrew Lee

Hometown: Elizabethtown, Kentucky
Undergrad University: University of Kentucky
What was your undergraduate degree?: Computer Engineering and Computer Science
What degree are you seeking at AFIT?: Computer Science
Why did you choose to come to AFIT?: I wanted to continue my education and explore new opportunities for innovation and research.
What are you looking forward to most while you are here?: I’m most looking forward to applying knowledge from coursework in research projects that service real and anticipated operational needs.
What are you hoping to do after you leave AFIT?: I would like to track 17S after UCT and apply AI tools to network attack and defense.
 


2d Lt David Crow

Hometown: Kansas City, Missouri
Undergrad University: Missouri University of Science and Technology
What was your undergraduate degree?: Computer Science
What degree are you seeking at AFIT?: Computer Science
What fun things did you do this summer before coming to AFIT?: Got married and honeymooned in Cozumel
Why did you choose to come to AFIT?: Seems like a good program and a cool experience
What are you looking forward to most while you are here?: The coursework
What are you hoping to do after you leave AFIT?: Complete UCT and work as a 17S
 


2d Lt Michael Sherburne

Hometown: Burke, Virginia
Undergrad University: Virginia Tech
What was your undergraduate degree?: B.S. Electrical Engineering
What degree are you seeking at AFIT?: M.S. Electrical Engineering
What fun things did you do this summer before coming to AFIT?: Worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory on their Magnetic Shock Experiment
Why did you choose to come to AFIT?: Continue cutting-edge research and networking with a lot of other officers who are here as well
What are you looking forward to most while you are here?: Making new friends and continuing my collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory
What are you hoping to do after you leave AFIT?: Work operationally as a 62E1E, and then go for my PhD after that. Hopefully MIT or University of New Mexico.
 


2d Lt Patrick Latcham

Hometown: Paynesville, Minnesota
Undergrad University: University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
What was your undergraduate degree?: B.S. Electrical Engineering
What degree are you seeking at AFIT?: M.S. Electrical Engineering in Navigation, Guidance, and Controls
What fun things did you do this summer before coming to AFIT?: Took a honeymoon cruise in the western Caribbean.
Why did you choose to come to AFIT?: AFIT has a good combination of quality education and research opportunities that can’t be found at civilian institutions.
What are you looking forward to most while you are here?: Being a part of cutting edge research, as well as meeting other officers with similar interests.
What are you hoping to do after you leave AFIT?: Work as a developmental engineer, hopefully directly in research and development.

What was your undergraduate degree?: Operations Research
What degree are you seeking at AFIT?: Masters in Operations Research
What fun things did you do this summer before coming to AFIT?: Travelled to Europe
Why did you choose to come to AFIT?: To further my education
What are you looking forward to most while you are here?: Traveling around
What are you hoping to do after you leave AFIT?: Not sure.
