Dr. Polanka's interests include all areas of heat transfer, combustion, turbulence, and advanced instrumentation.  His current research interests revolve around combustion phenomena relating to the integration of novel combustors such as the inter-turbine burner and ultra compact combustor into engine systems in the Combustion Optimization And Laser (COAL) laboratory. Dr. Polanka furthermore has efforts relating to film cooling of turbine hardware subject to high fuel air ratio regimes.  His other major research thrust is involved with enhancing the performance of small engines primarily for unmanned aerial systems. Investigations include expanding the operating envelope of RPA engines at altitude as well as conversions of these engines to alternative fuels.  Previous efforts, while at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Propulsion Directorate, have focused on heat transfer and aerodynamics of turbines.  These specifically included film cooling and unsteady effects including vane rotor interactions and blade tip shroud interactions.  Dr. Polanka has published more than 100 journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports.  He is an Associate Fellow of AIAA, the past Chair of the Dayton-Cincinnati Section of AIAA, and the Faculty Advisor for the AFIT Student Section of AIAA.  He is also a Fellow of the ASME and a member of the K-14 Gas Turbine Heat Transfer Committee within ASME.
