Dr. J.O. Miller is an Associate Professor in the Department of Operational Sciences at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT).  He has been at AFIT since 1997 serving as both Military and Civilian Deputy Department Head and as Director of the Center for Operational Analysis. Dr. Miller’s military career began in 1976 when he entered the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) a few weeks after graduating from Holland High School, in Holland, Michigan.  He graduated from USAFA on 28 May 1980 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force.  He completed Initial Qualification Training for the Minuteman II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) at Vandenberg AFB, CA in August 1980 and was then assigned to the 509 Strategic Missile Wing at Whiteman AFB, Missouri.  While at Whiteman, Dr. Miller served as a missile combat crew member, instructor crew member, and eventually as the senior standardization evaluation crew commander. He was then assigned to the Missile Employment Division, Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Joint Strategic Target Planning Staff, Offutt AFB, Nebraska.  While at Offutt Dr. Miller served as a scientific analyst responsible for providing Air Force reentry vehicle fratricide data used in targeting ICBMs for the Single Integrated Operations Plan.  In 1990, Dr. Miller returned to USAFA as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  Dr. Miller served as the Division Chief for Academic Support.  In 1993, Dr. Miller was selected for the AFIT Faculty Pipeline Program and entered the Ph.D. program in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Ohio State University. He retired as a Lt Col in January 2003.
