Lt Col James Bevins has been an Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering in the Engineering Physics Department of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) since 2017. In 2018, he was selected as the Air Force Technical Applications Endowed Term Chair for Nuclear Treaty Monitoring.  Lt Col Bevins’s research interests include radiation transport modeling, radiation detection and analysis methods for nuclear security applications, nuclear forensics techniques, and nuclear weapon effects. He has advised 4 PhD students (all current) and 8 M.S. students (1 current) and has served on 8 committees (2 current). He has received 8 research grants, published 14 journal articles, and 24 peer-reviewed conference proceedings.  He was awarded the Tau Beta Pi AFIT Outstanding Thesis Advisor and AFIT Early Career Achievement Awards in 2019.

Lt Col James Bevins graduated from the University of Tennessee with a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering in May 2009 and received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Tennessee.  He was selected to attend AFIT and earned a M.S. in Nuclear Engineering in March 2011.  Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico.  There he worked mission planning support and survivability/vulnerability analysis for every U.S. Air Force nuclear weapon and delivery system.  In March 2013, he was selected to attend Sandia National Laboratories Weapon Intern Program (WIP), where he investigated open source modeling of nuclear weapons.  In August 2014, he was selected to attend the University of California, Berkeley for doctoral studies in nuclear engineering as a National Science Foundation Fellow.  Lt Col Bevins graduated in August 2017, and his dissertation research focused on methods to develop customizable neutron spectra for the production of realistic synthetic post-detonation debris.
