Dr. Evans currently teaches courses in lasers, nonlinear optics, and optical materials. He serves as a research mentor and advisor to several students at AFIT and was previously appointed to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Central Florida and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Prior to joining the faculty at AFIT, Dr. Evans was a veteran of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) where he performed various roles within the enterprise including Principal Investigator, Project Manager, Lab Manager, and Trainee. He spent more than a decade with the laboratory characterizing materials and developing novel sources of coherent radiation in the infrared spectral bands. Dr. Evans was a part of research collaborations with other directorates within the laboratory, the Army and Navy Research Laboratories, as well as several contractors and FFRDCs. At the time of his departure, he had managed a research portfolio valued at more than $20M.

He is a member of the international society for optics and photonics (SPIE) and a senior member of Optica. His areas of interest include laser beam steering, nonlinear parametric conversion, solid-state laser gain media, transition metal complexes, laser spectroscopy, infrared laser systems, novel laser resonators, and laser effects. He has authored 30 articles papers in the field of optics and lasers and his work has been featured in Laser Focus World.
