Program Description

The Scientific and Technical Intelligence studies is a multi-disciplinary field that focuses on the practical application of data driven techniques to improve understanding of complex intelligence related concepts in order to more accurately assess possible threats and recommend defensible, actionable recommendations to senior military leadership. S&TI leverages the expertise developed via theoretical and practical studies in other disciplines to derive practical techniques to access and manage data sets (e.g., management of information systems); the efficiently manipulate data (e.g., computer science); examine patterns and relationships among data from a wide variety of complex intelligence collections systems (e.g., operations research, computer science, statistics, physics, mechanics, electrical engineering); develop descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and predictive analytic models (e.g., operations research); develop and field applications to automate the use of data analytics techniques (e.g., computer science); and manage the deployment of such applications; and proper communicate this information to the relevant customer.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants must be a current DoD military member, U.S. government civilian, or DoD contractor. The general requirements for admission to the S&TI MS program in the Department of Engineering Physics are:

Degree Required: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited educational institution. 

Mathematics Required: College calculus with a grade of B or better 

Test Required: GRE - 153V/148Q 

GPA Required: Overall - 3.0; Mathematics - 3.0; Major - 3.0 

Waivers to the above requirements may be granted on an individual basis by the Curriculum Committee.

Outcomes & Objectives


The S&TI Master of Science degree produces graduates who meet the following expectations:

Breadth. Apply data analytics techniques to both improve understanding of intelligence related phenomenology and enable evidence-based decision-making for military applications

Depth. Develop quantifiable and defensible assessments and related uncertainty quantification by applying data analytic principles

Professionalism. Professionally communicate, in a universally accessible format, complex analytic solutions and results

Lifelong learning. Understand applicability of advances in the field of technical intelligence and the application of ever advancing data analytic techniques


The S&TI degree will produce graduates who possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities for state-of-the-art technical intelligence upon graduation:

• Apply advanced concepts in mathematics and physics, including analytic, computational, and statistical methods to applications in the areas of technical intelligence which support the AF, DoD and Intelligence community mission requirements

• Apply communication skills to effectively summarize and explain complex technical intelligence concepts to technical, non-technical, managerial, and executive audiences and provide advocacy for solutions derived from rigorous analytic methodologies.

• Interpret the relevance, impact, and risk of adversary adoption of emerging and disruptive technologies and predict expected phenomenology against real-world targets to include new, emerging, and revolutionary technologies

• Devise algorithms to organize, and access large and complex data from a variety of sources in order to capture uncertainty in forecasting future system developments/employments and derive rigorous insights from large quantities of data from diverse sensor and collection systems

Degree Requirements

The degree requires 36 quarter hours of AFIT in-residence, graduate-level coursework and a minimum of 12 quarter hours of thesis research. Prerequisites are noted in the course descriptions. Some transfer credit is possible, subject to the restrictions of ENOI 36-167 Transfer Credit Policy.

  • Core coursework (24 hours)
  • Electives (12 hours)
    Must be taken from within one of the three specialty areas: Data Science, Sensor Phenomenology, and Scientific Methodologies.
  • Thesis research (12 Hours)
