So these are our Ultimakers 5S printers, we used these to print objects for mainly lab use, hardware, brackets to use in the labs. What’s on this printer right now is a couple of small plastic plugs that we printed to specifically fit an application. These are filament printers, in this base, there will be spools of filament like this that about 3mm in diameter on the filament. It gets fed through these tubes into the print head, heated near its melting point and pushed out to form a thin strand of material called a road. Those roads are then built up in a layer to combine into a large printed object. We can print up to about a one foot cube in these printers and right now this gray plastic material that this is made out of and that you see on this printer is called polylatic acid, it’s a fairly weak plastic but it is very cheap and we use it a lot for just proof of concept, making sure that things will fit correctly, that they’re the size and shape that we wanted, that we have the parts right before we move to one of the other printers to make something out of a more expensive medium; whether it’s in plastic printing in here or in the metal printers in another lab.
