Welcome to AFIT's Artificial Intelligence Technology Research and Education Consortium (AI TREC)

At the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), our mission is to educate defense professionals and conduct research across all frontiers of innovation, this includes pushing the boundary of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities across the Department of Defense (DoD) and beyond. Here are some key educational programs currently available in AI and related fields:

Autonomy Certificate from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ENG): This certificate program offers specialization in the development of autonomous systems. It provides a broad understanding of autonomy concepts and allows for in-depth knowledge in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, unmanned aerial systems, and human-machine teaming. The program is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to develop and manage autonomous technologies.

Master's Degree in Computer Science: The Master's program in Computer Science develops competence in a wide range of areas, including computer engineering, systems, and science. The program emphasizes topics of direct Air Force interest and meets the advanced educational requirements of officers in relevant specialties. Core sequences include Artificial Intelligence, Computer Networks, High Performance Computing, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, and VLSI/VHSIC Systems.

PhD in Computer Science: The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer Science is a research-focused program that recognizes mastery of the field, the ability to conduct independent research, and the dissemination of significant and original contributions. Research areas include Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Computer Architectures, Computer Networks, Cloud Computing, Cryptography, Computer/Network Attack and Defense, High Performance Computing, Reverse Engineering, Robotics, and Software Engineering.

Master of Science in Data Science: The Master of Science in Data Science program provides a comprehensive education in both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of data-driven techniques. It prepares students to analyze and solve the complex data-driven challenges faced by the Department of Defense (DoD). Core coursework includes classes in mathematical theory, programming, data engineering, and machine learning/artificial intelligence algorithms. The degree culminates in a capstone thesis, which may consist of the student either applying these techniques to a DoD-related problem or conducting novel research within the field.

PhD in Data Science: The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Data Science entails completion of rigorous coursework requirements that prepare the student for advanced research and analysis in the field. The doctoral degree is characterized as a research degree with substantial emphasis placed on the completion of the dissertation research. Research areas include algorithmic implementation, applied statistics, data engineering, and machine learning.

Continuing Education through the School of Systems and Logistics (LS), specifically the Data Analytics track: The School of Systems and Logistics offers professional continuing education courses in areas such as acquisition management, logistics management, contracting, systems management, software engineering, and financial management. The Data Analytics track provides courses that enhance skills in data analysis, which are essential for AI development and implementation.

AFIT’s Graduate Certificate in Data Analytics integrates AI/ML across its curriculum and offers participants an opportunity to enhance the capabilities of their unit, empowering data-driven decision making at every level.  This online, five-course program delivers DoD-focused AI/ML skills through a flexible distance-learning format, enabling CONUS & OCONUS students to succeed. With no prior coding experience required, students are introduced to Python programming and build expertise in data analytics techniques tailored to military and federal needs.

These programs and certificates provide opportunities for individuals looking to expand their knowledge and skills in autonomy, computer science, and data analytics, all of which are foundational to AI development.

The Air Force Institute of Technology is home to a variety of AI-related research thrusts that span across multiple centers. Key players in these research efforts include:

Autonomy and Navigation Technology (ANT) Center: The ANT Center focuses on developing navigation technologies that enable precise positioning in any environment. Their research encompasses:

  • Autonomous and Cooperative Systems: Developing theories and technologies that allow multiple vehicles and sensors to work together autonomously to solve navigation and targeting challenges.
  • Non-GPS Precision Navigation: Creating alternative navigation methods for environments where GPS is unavailable or unreliable, such as vision-aided navigation and navigation using signals of opportunity.
  • Robust GPS Navigation/NAVWAR: Enhancing GPS resilience against jamming and improving positioning accuracy for critical missions.

Center for Cyberspace Research (CCR): The CCR conducts research in cyber defense, information operations, and computer network attack and defense. Their AI-related research includes:

  • Machine Learning for Cybersecurity: Developing AI algorithms to detect and mitigate cyber threats.
  • Autonomous Cyber Operations: Creating systems that can autonomously respond to cyber incidents.
  • Data Analytics: Utilizing AI to analyze large datasets for threat intelligence and situational awareness.

Center for Space Research and Assurance (CSRA): The CSRA focuses on space systems and operations, with AI applications in:

  • Satellite Autonomy: Developing AI algorithms that enable satellites to perform tasks independently.
  • Space Situational Awareness: Using AI to monitor and predict the behavior of objects in space.
  • Mission Planning: Applying AI to optimize space mission strategies and resource allocation.

These centers, among others at AFIT, contribute to a broad range of research initiatives focusing on domains like autonomy, cybersecurity, data analytics, and machine learning.

AFIT's AI Technology and Education Research Consortium (AI TREC) actively engages with a variety of partners to advance AI research and education. These partnerships support innovative research and foster collaboration between government, academia, and industry. Notable partnerships include:

  • Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL): AFIT and AFRL have a longstanding strategic partnership aimed at maintaining and advancing the technological superiority of the Air Force. Read more here. This collaboration facilitates joint research initiatives, resource sharing, and the development of innovative technologies.
  • Hangar 18 Collaboration: AFIT and AFRL coordinate digital teams and assets through the Hangar 18 initiative at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Read more here. This cooperation brings together software and data engineering teams to create joint efforts that benefit programs such as Low-Cost Attritable Systems. The collaboration aims to employ agile methodologies in engineering practices and deliver solutions on Air Force networks focused primarily on digital engineering use cases.
  • Digital Literacy Summit with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): In June 2022, AFIT, AFRL, and Central State University co-sponsored a Digital Literacy Summit to strengthen collaborative agreements and promote research efforts between HBCUs and the Department of the Air Force's Science and Technology communities. AFIT supports collaboration through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), which provide a framework for cooperative research between government and non-federal entities, e.g. industry and academia.
