Academic Eligibility Criteria by Program Type

The information and documents submitted during the application process will be assessed to determine if a student is academically eligible for their desired program. Academic eligibility does not guarantee program admission but is required to move forward with selection/admission.

The standard academic eligibility requirements are listed below by program type. NOTE: There are some programs with eligibility criteria that vary from the standards listed below. These exceptions are based on the academic requirements of the program. Additional information on eligibility criteria variants can be found in the academic catalog and/or program webpages.

Doctoral Degree Programs

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university (or the equivalent degree from another country) with an overall, math, and major GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Master's degree in a related field from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university (or the equivalent degree from another country) with an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Two letters of Recommendation (only if Master's degree was completed at a college or university other than AFIT EN Graduate School of Engineering & Management).
  • Minimum GRE scores of 156 verbal and 160 quantitative or minimum GMAT scores of 650, as applicable to the program requested.
Master's Degree Programs

    • *The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Engineering Management, as well as the Master of Engineering in Applied Systems Engineering do NOT require GRE or GMAT testing.
Graduate Certificate Programs
  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university (or the equivalent degree from another country) with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale with adequate undergraduate preparation in their proposed field of study.
  • *Graduate Certificate Programs do not require GRE or GMAT testing for admission.
Non-Degree Seeking Students
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university (or the equivalent degree from another country) with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • *Non-degree seeking students are not required to submit GRE or GMAT testing for admission. However, they may be required to submit GRE or GMAT test scores in the future if they decide to continue with AFIT by applying for admission to a specific program.
  • NOTE: Admission in non-degree seeking status is reserved for those who are interested in course enrollment for professional development, intellectual enrichment, or exploring the possibility of applying for a graduate degree program or certificate program. Non-degree seeking students should be aware of the following restrictions and policies:
    • Admission to non-degree status neither guarantees nor implies subsequent admission to a degree or certificate program.
    • Course registration for non-degree seeking students is based on space available, students must meet all course prerequisites, and instructor permission is required for all course registrations.
    • Non-degree seeking students are expected to enroll in part-time status (less than 9 credit hours per quarter).
    • If a non-degree seeking student later applies and is admitted to a graduate program, no more than 16 credit hours of already completed course work may be applied to the program. The exact number of credit hours applied will be determined by the faculty of the admitted program.

Additional Information:
  • Eligibility Criteria Waivers: Individuals whose academic credentials do not meet the program requirements but who possess adequate undergraduate preparation in their proposed field of study are encouraged to apply. Eligibility waivers for some criteria may be granted on an individual basis. Applicants do not need to submit any additional requests for waiver consideration since all applications are evaluated holistically as a part of the normal review process. The final academic eligibility decision is based on any approved or disapproved waivers. If waivers are disapproved, faculty comments will be provided with details specific to the eligibility decision in the LOAE.
  • Time for Completion Waivers: Military personnel, international officers, and civilians who apply to AFIT for full-time graduate study under sponsorship opportunities (full pay and allowances) through a military service or government organization may be granted a waiver permitting an early start term for an overall longer than normal program duration to allow time for remediation of academic deficiencies and/or additional background preparation.
  • Conditional Eligibility: Applicants who do not meet the program eligibility criteria, who need remedial or prerequisite coursework prior to attending AFIT, or who are in the process of completing program eligibility criteria (for example - the required degree is in progress and scheduled for completion but not yet awarded) may be granted academic eligibility on a conditional basis. For conditionally eligible students, full admission will not be granted until the conditional requirements are met and validated through submission and review of updated official documents (such as an updated official transcript).
