AFIT welcomes new Staff Judge Advocate

Posted Friday, October 02, 2020

Major Timothy Bennett was born and raised in Logan, Utah. His father was a high school teacher and his mother worked as an aid in the schools.  His dad was also a coach and Bennett spent much of his childhood helping him.  “I’d run around with my dad at high school track meets holding stopwatches or sit behind the bench at basketball games helping to keep stats,” recalled Bennett.  During high school Bennett played on the football, basketball and baseball teams.  He spent many summer days at a nearby lake on his parent’s boat and water skiing.

Bennett stayed close to home for college, attending Utah State University where he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in political science.  He met his wife through mutual friends while an undergrad and they now have three children.

Bennett learned about the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corp at a career fair while earning his JD at William and Mary School of Law in Virginia.  Even though he didn’t have prior military experience, he thought it sounded like a job he would enjoy.  He graduated from law school in 2011, and then received a direct commission into the AF JAG Corps in January 2013.  “I like the variety and the opportunity to go to new places,” said Bennett.  “You get to have meaningful experiences and do things that are important and make a difference.”

His first two assignments were as the Assistant SJA dealing with contracts, legal assistance, preventive law, adverse actions, and military justice for the 19th Airlift Wing at Little Rock AFB, Arkansas and then for the 55th Wing, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.

Next, Bennett served as the Regional Medical Law Consultant at the USAFE Command Surgeon’s Office on Ramstein Air Base in Germany.  In that role, he was the primary medical-legal advisor for the fixed medical treatment facilities and base legal offices throughout Europe, as well as a number of expeditionary medical facilities and legal offices.

Bennett joined the AFIT team in August 2020.  In partnership with Mr. Dan Shephard, a civilian attorney, Bennett’s office provides legal advice on military justice, ethics, intellectual property, fiscal and contract law.  The team also provides general legal assistance such as wills and powers of attorney.

Bennett is looking forward to working in AF higher education.  “I like the education setting – my grandfather and my dad were teachers and my wife has a degree in early childhood education, so mixing that with my job as an attorney will be enjoyable,” said Bennett.  “AFIT’s mission and goals sound intriguing to me and I will do what I can to help everything continue to run smoothly.”
