How well do you understand our depot maintenance process? Do you wish you knew more? Whether your background is maintenance or logistics, chances are you haven’t had many opportunities to learn about how depots operate and if you’re like me, when I was a young maintenance officer, I could fit everything I knew about depots on a sticky-note. Or worse yet, maybe you just got an assignment to a depot and the only thing you know is not to call it a “DEE-PO”. So instead of showing up to your new assignment clueless, wouldn’t it be better if you could hit the ground running when you get there? Because trying to figure it out as you go is never fun. Lucky for you, the Air Force Institute of Technology’s School of Systems and Logistics can help. We’ve got some courses that will not only ensure you hit the ground running, but can give you a real advantage. Let’s start with a series of online courses that we call our “09-series” – LOG 109, 209 and 309. If you’re new to the depot, LOG 109, Fundamentals of Industrial Maintenance, is a perfect place to start. Here, you’ll learn the basics – from how a depot operates to recognizing the business processes they use. By the time you complete LOG 109, you’ll be able to answer questions like: Exactly who can perform depot maintenance? How is material support provided? And, how do we pay for it? If you’re already somewhat familiar with how depots operate, then skip 109 and jump right in to LOG 209, Concepts of Industrial Maintenance Management. This course dives a bit deeper into production management techniques like constraint resolution and demand forecasting. These techniques will help you more effectively apply depot resources while improving quality in an “industrial” maintenance environment. Finally, we’ve got LOG 309, Applied Concepts of Industrial Operations Management. This course is for those of you who might already be managing depot maintenance activities. In LOG 309, you’ll study strategic planning, forecasting, project scheduling and forming a business case analysis. You’ll also have a chance to analyze some of the issues facing our depot operations, along with some of the modern management techniques they use. Stepping outside the “09” series, but continuing the theme of industrial maintenance related courses, we’ve got LOG 210, Applied Concepts of Industrial Maintenance Management. This course uses focused exercises to show you how to apply process improvement techniques to more effectively support industrial maintenance programs. But maybe you’re not really a fan of online courses and you’re looking for something more hands-on…or maybe you’ve already been assigned to the depot for a while and you don’t really need the “09-series” courses…or maybe you oversee some other complex process and you’re struggling to meet schedule and want to improve process flow. Then LOG 238 Critical Chain Project Management might be just the course you’re looking for. LOG 238 is a 3-day, live course that will give you a strong introduction to critical chain project scheduling. Through hands-on simulations and exercises, you’ll learn how the “Theory of Constraints” ties in to the Critical Chain approach to scheduling and executing complex operations.
