Cyber-Physical Sensing: Artificial Intelligence

Program Description

The Cyber-Physical Sensing Certificate Program; Artificial Intelligence (AI) is designed for students with an educational background in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.  Graduates can conduct exploratory and advanced research to develop innovative solutions that help warfighters predict mission-level effects based on sensor performance across land, air, sea, space, and cyberspace. This program is targeted for military officers, mid-grade enlisted, or DoD civilians assigned to positions at the Air Force Research Laboratories, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), and DoD conducting CPS research, development, design, and analysis.

Admissions Requirements

A bachelor's degree from an accredited university in computer science or engineering (computer or electrical) is required, and candidates must have completed a college-level differential equations course. The certificate program is available to US citizens only.

Outcomes & Objectives

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

  • A graduate will be able to design, implement, evaluate, and defend network resources.
  • A graduate will have the ability to analyze the time and space complexities of algorithms and the Nondeterministic Polynomial (NP)-complete problems.
  • A graduate will be able to apply the knowledge in the trade space of learning theory, machine learning algorithm design, and application.


Student Outcomes (SOs)

  • A student will be able to complete the use of graphs, B-trees, AVL-trees, indexing, hashing, sorting, searching, and recursive algorithms on specific structures.
  • A student will be able to evaluate models of logic, predicate calculus, production –rules, reasoning, search theorem-proving, natural language processing, vision planning.
  • A student will be able to measure statistical machine learning, pattern recognition, classification, regression, and clustering.
  • A student will be able to assess the vulnerabilities of mobile networks, security, and wireless, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and other associated devices.

Degree Requirements

All students successfully completing the requirements and maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0 in the Cyber-Physical Sensing AI program (16 credit hours) will receive a certificate and have the completed certificate noted on their AFIT graduate transcript.  The Certificate can be earned as a minor concentration as part of another AFIT degree or accomplished independently.


The Cyber-Physical Sensing AI program is a series of four courses intended to educate students at the graduate level. This program is three-quarters long (one fall course, one winter course, and two spring courses). The typical program duration is approximately nine months. If the student cannot take the required courses per quarter as indicated, the time to complete may extend to 36 months. No additional electives or research hours are required for the certificate. The courses comprising the program are offered in-residence and are listed below.
