Operations Research

Program Description

The AFIT Operations Research Certificate Program (ORCP) provides students with a fundamental understanding of operations research and its ability to provide informed decision-making in both military and industrial applications. Topics include the formulation of decision problems, identification of objectives, empirical data analysis, and specific multi-objective analysis techniques, and facilitation skills for working with decision makers and technical experts.

The ORCP is a graduate-level program centered on the principles of operations research. The curriculum consists of five graduate level courses for a total of 20 graduate credits. The course sequence provides both a theoretical foundation of analysis techniques and insight concerning the interpersonal skills necessary for effective application of such techniques to real world decisions. The ORCP is designed to support part-time students. All students are expected to participate in the ORCP via one distance learning AFIT course for at least five quarters until completing the full certificate requirements.

Admissions Requirements

In order to be considered for admission to the ORCP, candidates must meet the AFIT Graduate School of Engineering and Management requirements for admissions.

Degree Required: A completed bachelor's degree in an appropriate engineering or scientific discipline (mathematics, physical science, engineering, or computer science are highly desirable).

Mathematics Required: Successful completion of undergraduate courses in calculus I, calculus II, and probability is required.

GPA Required: Overall - 3.0; Mathematics - 3.0; Major - 3.0 

Waivers to the stated requirements may be granted on an individual basis as approved by the Department of Operational Sciences, through the ORCP Program Manager.

Outcomes & Objectives

Student Outcomes (SOs)

Our program outcomes (student knowledge/skills/abilities) produce graduate certificate conferees who exhibit:

  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills. Have the ability to classify, formulate, and solve operations research problems.

  • Operations research specific knowledge. Have knowledge of operations research areas such as applied statistics, mathematical programming, and decision analysis to directly support decision and policy making activities.

  • Knowledge of the fundamental principles of multi-objective decision analysis. The ability to structure decision problems, identify objectives and effective ways to measure them, and analysis techniques for obtaining insight from the models developed.

  • Communication Skills. Develop written communications skills necessary to present complex problems to a decision-making audience: problem definition, modeling methodologies, including solution advocacy that utilizes rigorous analytical support as well as awareness of the intricacies of working with multiple stakeholders, often with conflicting priorities and preferences, and the necessary facilitation.

Degree Requirements

Successful completion of the ORCP requires a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale). Cumulative time to completion is normally 5 quarters. All required courses must be completed within a four year time period. There are no exit examinations required, and no final project. However, there are numerous projects and assignments required in the various courses that give an opportunity for the student to apply their knowledge to broad problems.
