Graduate Certificate Program in Hypersonic Flight

Graduate Certificate Program in Hypersonic Flight

Program Description

For all eligible students, AFIT now offers a Graduate Certificate in Hypersonic Flight. This program consists of four courses, three core and one elective. The core courses cover the unique complexities of the hypersonic flight environment as well as hypersonic propulsion concepts. The elective course may be selected from the areas of computational simulation, reentry dynamics, nonequilibrium processes, or rocket propulsion.

Admissions Requirements

Degree Required: An ABET-accredited degree in aeronautical, aerospace, astronautical, or mechanical engineering. Prospective students without an ABET-accredited degree in engineering may be admitted on an individual basis pending review of their complete transcripts.

Mathematics Required: Calculus, Ordinary Differential Equations

Test Required: None

GPA Required: Overall - 3.0; Mathematics - 3.0; Major - 3.0

Outcomes & Objectives

The Graduate Certificate in Hypersonic Flight is designed for students with traditional engineering background (primarily aerospace and mechanical engineers) and produces graduates who can understand, evaluate, and communicate the unique complexities of the hypersonic flight environment.

Specific educational objectives are:

  • Graduates will be able to perform appropriate engineering analysis of hypersonic systems and subsystems while understanding the correct uses and limitations of the appropriate models.
  • Graduates will be able to effectively communicate the difference between hypersonic flight regimes and the subsonic and super-sonic flight regimes to customers, peers, and leadership levels.
  • Graduates will be able to work through technological challenges to meet the needs of the Air Force, the Space Force, and other DoD organizations.

Specific student objectives are:

  • A graduate will have a general understanding of the differences between hypersonic flight regimes and the subsonic and super-sonic flight regimes which make the hypersonic environment unique.
  • A graduate will have a thorough understanding of the nonlinear aerothermodynamic properties of hypersonic flows and how to approach and appropriate engineering analysis given hypersonic flight conditions.
  • A graduate will have the skills needed to critically analyze hypersonic vehicle systems and subsystems at the appropriate fidelity.
