Lean Six Sigma cultural transformation was the topic of an AFIT visit to General Electric Aircraft Engines' Customer Education and Training Center (CTEC), in Springdale, OH, on Thursday, 13 May 2010.  Lean Six Sigma is a methodology to reduce waste through disciplined efforts to understand and reduce variation while increasing the speed and flow in the supply chain.  Lean Six Sigma is a key tenet of Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century (AFSO 21).  As part of LOGM 567 Lean Management Operations and LOGM 569 Maintenance and Production Management courses, nineteen students from the Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Operations Research, Cost Analysis, and Systems Engineering masters programs attended along with four faculty members from the Department of Operational Sciences and Department of Systems and Engineering Management.  Mr. Rick Kind, GE’s Air Force Programs manager, led a variety of presentations on Lean 6 Sigma training, deployment, and supply chain management.  Completing the visit was a tour of the training center where the students saw first-hand the progression of engine technology from 1960s military helicopter engines to the newest commercial engine, the GEnx.  POC: Lt Col Tim Pettit, PhD, Department of Operational Sciences.  timothy.pettit@afit.edu.
