The Air Force Institute of Technology’s Graduate School of Engineering and Management (AFIT GSEM) has opened enrollment to its new System Dynamics Graduate Certificate program for both non-degree and degree-seeking students. The certificate can be earned as a minor concentration as part of another AFIT degree or accomplished independently entirely via online/distance learning, providing maximum flexibility for working professionals.

The Certificate in System Dynamics (CSD) provides a methodology using simulation and mathematical modeling to better understand complex and dynamic systems. The CSD enables users to better determine how feedback loops, stocks (inventories), and flows (rates) change over time and influence system behavior. Inherently interdisciplinary in approach, it can support fields such as engineering, economics, project management, logistics, environmental, and strategic decision-making.

“The CSD program takes students with diverse backgrounds, such as program management, engineering, financial analysis, etc., and produces graduates who understand, and can effectively use the tools and techniques of systems thinking and system dynamics.

Our graduates are able to make positive system analysis and modeling impacts, resulting in improved outcomes for acquisition systems,” said Dr. Brandon Lucas, program chair, AFIT’s Department of Systems Engineering and Management.

Sponsored by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, Research and Engineering (OUSD(R&E)), the CSD program helps the DoD develop and maintain a knowledgeable workforce to support and execute DoD program workforce modernization needs in microelectronics, research, acquisition, and other areas.

The program consists of four required courses that provide a common breadth of knowledge, basic and advanced modeling, and a capstone course to employ skills on a chosen project. Active-duty military, DoD civilians, and defense contractors with backgrounds in STEM or related fields who are working in defense acquisition, engineering and management, logistics, or research are eligible to apply to the program.

AFIT’s Graduate School of Engineering and Management (GSEM) provides in-residence and distance learning graduate degrees and certificates in engineering, applied science, mathematics and management. GSEM provides its students with several significant advantages, including a more personalized educational experience, academic programs with a defense-related focus, and research on high-priority defense problems.
