Alum promoted to brigadier general

AFIT alum, Brigadier General Matthew S. Woodruff, USA (M.S. Logistics Management, 2004) was promoted on 6 January 2023.  Woodruff is the Assistant Adjutant General of the Ohio Army National Guard.

Ohio assistant adjutant general for Army to be promoted to brigadier general

The Ohio National Guard will host a promotion ceremony for Col. Matthew S. Woodruff, Ohio assistant adjutant general for Army, to the rank of brigadier general on 6 January 2023.

Background:
Col. Matthew S. Woodruff has served as the assistant adjutant general for Army since October 2022. He is responsible for establishing policies, priorities, and oversight for the readiness of Ohio National Guard Soldiers in six brigade-level major subordinate commands.

Woodruff began his military career in May 1990 when he enlisted as a medical specialist in the U.S. Army Reserve. He received an active-duty commission as an infantry officer from Bowling Green State University in 1996. He is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic Course and the Combined Logistics Officer Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College, Advanced Operations Course, and the U.S. Army War College.

He most recently served as the Ohio Army National Guard chief of staff, with previous assignments as commander of the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, including four months as the initial joint task
force commander for Ohio’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and as the dual-status commander for hospital response missions in 2021-22.

Woodruff commanded the 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment in addition to serving in several key staff positions in the Ohio Army National Guard to include the assistant operations officer, 37th Infantry
Brigade Combat Team, at Camp Spann, Afghanistan. He served on active duty from May 1996 to December 2008, with assignments in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, KY, and 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

Woodruff holds a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Bowling Green State University, a Master of Science in logistics management from the Air Force Institute of Technology, and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.
