The Air Force Institute of Technology’s Graduate School of Engineering and Management recognized recent graduates in their annual winter quarter commencement ceremony in March 2025.
AFIT’s
GSEM conferred 178 master’s degrees, and four doctorate degrees in science,
technology, engineering and math fields.
An additional five doctoral students and five master’s students that
graduated earlier in the academic year returned to participate in the ceremony.
The
graduating class included 128 Air Force officers, 17 United States Space Force
officers, one Marine Corps officer, 13 Army officers, three Air Force enlisted
and 16 Department of Defense civilians.
International students included two graduates from the Israeli Air Force
and one civilian graduate from the Federal Republic of Germany.
Distinguished Air Force guests in attendance included Lt. Gen. Andrea Tullos, Air University commander and president, Mr. Christopher Kemp, AU deputy director and Dr. Yolanda Williams, AU provost and chief academic officer from Maxwell AFB, Alabama.
The commencement’s guest speaker for the ceremony was Mr. Timothy Sakulich, executive director, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson AFB (AF contributed photo).
Sakulich emphasized the unique heritage and history of Wright-Patterson AFB, located in Dayton, Ohio, the birthplace of aviation, and how it is “synonymous with innovation, a crucible of ingenuity that has shaped the very fabric of the nation’s defense,” said Sakulich.
“Each
service [of the Air Force] brings unique expertise to the table and modern
warfare demands unprecedented integration of that. The relationships you have built here at AFIT,
and the understanding you’ve gained of different perspectives, will be
invaluable as you work together going forward as leaders to secure the nation,”
said Sakulich.
When highlighting
AFIT’s degree programs, Sakulich described how each unique discipline equipped graduates
with the specific knowledge and expertise required for facing the various technological
challenges, advancements and threats to our nation’s air, land, sea, space and
cyberspace environments. He encouraged
graduates to apply their degrees to solving these problems.
“Thinking
deeply is a crucial step towards solving the hardest problems. Your challenge is that thinking is not
enough; your challenge is to translate that advanced learning, that theoretical
knowledge into practical solutions that deliver a decisive combat advantage to
the Air Force and the Space Force,” said Sakulich.
Although
this was a time for graduates to celebrate their achievements and hard work, Sakulich
stressed that the real challenge was a call to action in the form of leadership.
“You have worked
hard to get here, and you have been given a remarkable gift; the investment of
time, resources and mentorship by [AFIT’s] esteemed faculty and many other
mentors that have shaped you into leaders of consequence.
Your
degree is only a milestone, and your education is part of a journey. Your responsibility now is to pay that
forward. This requires the ability to
inspire and motivate others, and to harness the collective intellect and
innovation of your teams.
And you
need to use that knowledge you’ve gained at AFIT to not only succeed in your
careers, but to lift others up,” said Sakulich.
