The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Dayton Section’s Antennas and Propagation Society/Geospatial and Remote Sensing Society/Microwave Theory and Technology Society Joint Chapter, chaired by the Air Force Institute of Technology’s Professor Emeritus Dr. Andrew Terzuoli and vice chaired by AFIT’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Assistant Professor, Maj. Timothy Wolfe, has been awarded a 2025 IEEE MTT-S Outstanding Chapter Award.

This award is given annually to a maximum of five percent of MTT-S chapters worldwide, and marks the chapter as one of the top 10 in the world. AFIT faculty have led as chapter officers for many years, and the consistent technical talks from AFIT students and faculty are a major part of why the chapter won this award. Guest speakers from around the local IEEE Dayton Section and from the Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, and the National Air and Space Intelligence Center have also participated. The use of teleconferencing, particularly AFIT’s access to the government version of Zoom, has enabled the broad accessibility of these recurring technical exchanges.

The Department of the Air Force and Department of Defense benefit greatly from engagement and notoriety with experts in the state of the art for microwave technology, which entails communications, guidance and navigation, and directed energy. In particular, this award enhances DAF and AFIT’s reputation in the microwave technology community. IEEE Dayton members believe this to be the first such IEEE award granted to AFIT, Air University and Air Education Training Command, and more generally, possibly the greater Air Force.

Maj. Wolfe’s future goals for the chapter are to continue to promote and grow the membership and participation. “As new students arrive in fall quarter, we’ll make sure they know they can be a part one of the top groups in the world, now with international recognition,” said Wolfe. He plans to submit the chapter for similar recognition with the IEEE APS next year as well. “It is extremely validating to have our chapter’s efforts be recognized not only as nationally excellent, but in fact verifiably world-class,” said Wolfe.
