Dr. Jeffery D. Weir was recognized in the December 2012 issue of Ohio Magazine as an Ohio Excellence in Education Honoree, being named one of the outstanding teachers at colleges and universities in the state.  Dr. Weir is an Associate Professor of Operations Research in the Department of Operational Sciences, Graduate School of Engineering and Management, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). He began teaching at AFIT in September 2002, and has demonstrated his commitment to excellence in education for over 10 years.  He has been selected as Instructor of the Quarter by three different cohorts of students and has graduated 29 master’s student with theses and 3 PhD students.  This year he ranked number one in teaching in the Department of Operational Sciences with the highest course load, highest teaching evaluations and most students advised; all while developing a new graduate course and significantly overhauling a second.  Not only is he active at AFIT, but he also volunteers at a local high school music department and with a middle school robotics club.  Exemplifying his status as a recognized expert in his field, last October, 2012, Dr. Weir was invited to speak at Arizona State University and at a combined session of the Military Applications Society and Decision Analysis Society of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS) annual symposium in Phoenix, AZ.

The citation from one of Dr. Weir’s student-nominated Instructor of the Quarter Award reads in part, “Dr. Jeffery Weir has consistently proven to be one of the best professors in the ENS department. He spends a considerable amount of time preparing his notes before class and makes them available for his students prior to class. This enables students to have more information at their disposal, see different theories, and learn more while being taught. His teaching style is excellent. Dr. Weir has a great sense of humor that is contagious and keeps all students interested in the material. At the same time his technical expertise is second to none. Students are impressed with his academic achievements and how he has such great command of his subject matters. Dr. Weir explains complex topics at levels that all students can understand and he gives wonderful examples that make learning the material much easier. Dr. Weir is also very giving of his time. No matter if the question deals with his class or any of the other classes, he always takes time to listen and answer.”
